Official UK HMPO Photo Standards

The UK government has strict guidelines, particularly regarding background tint and facial expressions.

โœ“ HMPO Specific Rules

  • โ€ขDimensions: 35 mm wide by 45 mm high. Head height (crown to chin) must measure between 29 mm and 34 mm.
  • โ€ขBackground Tint: Light grey or cream background. Pure stark white is often rejected by HMPO automated scanners.
  • โ€ขNeutral Expression: Mouth firmly closed, no teeth visible, no grinning or frowning. Eyes looking directly into camera.
  • โ€ขHair & Face: Hair must not cover eyes or eyebrows. Face must be fully clear and unobstructed.

โœ— Mistakes to Avoid

  • โ€ขGlasses Reflections: Tinted lenses or flash glare on spectacles will cause immediate rejection. It is best to remove glasses.
  • โ€ขShadows: Shadows on the face or behind the head against the backdrop.
  • โ€ขHead Tilted: Tilting your head sideways or forward/backward is not permitted.
